Chrome often saves images as WebP or AVIF files that won't open everywhere. This free extension is a save-image-as-type tool: right-click any image, then save it as JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, or JPEG XL. Animated WebP images can be saved as GIFs that play anywhere.

How to save an image in another format

  1. Install it from the Chrome Web Store .
  2. Right-click any image on any webpage.
  3. Choose Convert and Save Image.
  4. Pick Save as JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, or JPEG XL.

Supported formats

Format Best for
JPEG / JPG Smallest files for photos; lossy, no transparency. Best for email, docs, and apps that reject modern formats.
PNG Lossless with transparency. Best when you need exact pixels or an alpha channel.
GIF Universal animation support, including animated WebP sources. 256 colors, larger files.
WebP Modern lossy or lossless with transparency. Smaller than JPEG and PNG in most cases.
AVIF Smallest still-image compression with transparency and HDR. Newer app support.
JPEG XL Next-generation format; lossless JPEG recompression is reversible. Growing browser support.

  • Does it support animated WebP?

    Yes. Animated WebP images can be saved as GIF so they play in apps that still expect a GIF. Animated conversions can be slower than static ones.

  • How is this different from the convert tools?
